Cesar is a sickly mestizo boy, of the 1920s. Drawing was his escape from his illness. He continues this interest as he becomes a boy, then eventually as a young man by taking up Fine Arts in the University of the Philippines. In UP he meets like-minded artists, who wish to change art in the Philippines. However, it is there he discovers a disability that may break his dreams as an artist. Cesar is color blind. Still, he continues to pursue his interest, learning a way to make art despite his handicap. It was while in UP as well that he meets the woman who will become the greatest support of his life, Betty, a teenage pharmacy student from the University of Santo Tomas. They meet at a party held by Betty's brother. It was love at first sight, at least for Cesar. And their love finds ways to flourish in the conservative Philippines of the 1930s. When their relationship is discovered, Betty (18) is suddenly removed from Manila and returned to Cavite.
